Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

During the summer term in Year 1 all children take part in the phonics screening check. This is done for all Year 1 children across the country. The check tests the children's phonics knowledge and understanding through 40 different words. These words all contain the phonics sounds that the children learn in school.

They are split into real words and pseudo-words (non-sense or alien words). This is to gain an understanding of each child's phonics ability.

The pass mark for each of the previous years has been 32 out of 40 words correct.

The check takes between 5 and 10 minutes to complete and is done with a teacher.

We ensure that children are well prepared for this check through our daily phonics lessons.

Children who do not achieve the pass mark in Year 1 retake the check during Year 2 to ensure they have a solid phonics knowledge.

Examples of past checks from previous years can be found below.
