Empower, Learn, Celebrate

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

We are a class of 15 children. Our class teacher is Miss Watson and our teaching assistant is Mrs Kellett.

We learn through a creative curriculum and we have lots of exciting, purposeful continuous provision opportunities that allow us to develop and grow through memorable, fun activities.

If you have any further questions or queries, please contact Miss Watson on our Class DOJO page or via. email on fayewatson@distington-comm.cumbria.sch.uk

Our Curriculum

Please have a look through our curriculum map (below). This outlines our core topics for the year.

We will keep you updated with your child's learning throughout the year via. Earwig, Class DOJO and parents meetings.

Phonics

In Year 1, reading and phonics play a vital part in our learning. We take part in daily Read Write Inc. sessions which allow us to become confident and competent readers and writers.

We will be sitting the national phonics screening check on the week commencing 12th June 2023

Find more useful information about the phonics screening check here - Year 1 Phonics Screening 2023 | Your Questions Answered (phonicsscreeningtest.co.uk)

Strive 4 Five!

In Year 1, we are all 'Reading Rockstars'. We aim to read at least 5 times per week and are rewarded for our efforts with raffle tickets. These are entered into a weekly draw and children can win some brilliant prizes!

Most of our Y1 children will bring home 2 reading books. One book will directly match their current phonics ability, mirroring the sound in which they're focussing on in school, and the other an Accelerated Reading book. Accelerated Reading books are used to help develop your child's comprehension skills and your child will sit regular (informal) online 'quizzes' to assess their understanding of the story.

Earwig and Class DOJO.

Please access your child's Earwig and class DOJO page regularly for updates on, and photos capturing, their Y1 learning journey.

If you have difficulty in accessing either of these, please let Miss Watson or the school office know and we will help you with this.
