Music at DCS

Music teaching at Distington Community School aims to follow the specifications of the National Curriculum; providing a engaging, balanced and creative curriculum that ensures the progressive development of musical concepts, knowledge and skills. We believe that music plays an integral role within schools as a way of communicating that inspires and motivated pupils. It is vital for personal expression, and it can play an important part in personal development. 

 

Music reflects the culture and society we live in. Therefore, Music teaching and learning at All Saints' enables pupils to better understand the world they live in. Music also plays an important part in helping pupils feel part of a community. In addition to being a creative and enjoyable subject, we believe Music is also a highly academic subject. We aim to provide opportunities for all pupils to create, play and perform to an audience, while enjoying music and developing the skills needed to appreciate a wide variety of music forms.

 

In school, we follow the Learning Challenge Curriculum alongside the planning tool, KAPOW. Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure coverage and progression. It provides pupils with unique opportunities and experiences, from which, children can learn and develop a range of transferable skills. A important focus of our curriculum is to raise aspirations, create a sense of personal pride in achievement, and provide a purpose and relevance for learning. 

 

Through KAPOW, knowledge and skills are taught through the following strands: 

  • Listening and evaluating
  • Creating sound
  • Notation
  • Improvising and composing 
  • Performing - singing and playing

 

 

Each of these strands are split into lessons which show the sequencing of skills to support the children in their learning and which offer them the opportunity to embed these skills further in the making of a final product. Using KAPOW means that the learning from one year group to another flows and that coverage of the curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2 is complete.
