Mock archaeological digs!

In Year 1 and 2, we have been developing our understanding of how we find out about the past.

As part of our studies, we have taken part in a mock excavation using 'archaeology boxes' (sand boxes!)

Through this activity, the children developed their knowledge of The Great Fire of London as they found, discovered, excavated or 'unearthed' a variety of historical source examples which they then studied in groups to discover and deduce what they could tell us about this period of time from the past.

They also furthered their skills through an increased understanding and use of variety of sources to find things out about the past as well as asking and answering simple questions about old and new.

Our Year 2 children extended their learning through further analysis of different historical sources where we began to briefly discuss a source's provenance and how this can affect its reliability - e.g. some of the children were able to draw conclusions that we cannot always trust diary entries, for example, as people can interpret things differently and may exaggerate facts that they record.
